Sometimes, you just have to know who your friends know. Facebook stalking is, in these situations, vital and not at all creepy… sort of.
There is a way around Facebook’s privacy settings but it does require a little effort on your part (although LifeHacker does say it is easy once you have done the initial brain work).
First, you must find someone who you KNOW is a friend of your “target.” If you fail at this step, give up and find some real friends.
If your networking knowledge is sufficient enough to complete the first step it is all downhill from there.
Once you’ve nailed down a friend of your target, you need to find out both of their account ID names. You can find these by going to their Facebook page and looking at the end of the URL. It will read
https://www.facebook.com/ACCOUNT_ID
.
With both user’s IDs, insert them into a URL that looks like this: https://www.facebook.com/TARGET_ID/friends?and=FRIEND_OF_TARGET_ID
Obviously, do not just copy and paste the above into your browser, it will not work. Again, if that was your first response, stop now and step away from the internet.
If you have managed these simple steps, however, you will be rewarded with a list of common friends for the two ID’s entered. Stalk, Rinse, Repeat to find the whole list.
Why you would want to go to such lengths to find out who someone is friends with on Facebook is between you and your therapist, but if you absolutely must know, do it soon before someone complains that their privacy is being violated on the online, public platform.
