This clip of the mountain biker getting robbed at gunpoint, has gone viral so if you didn’t see our story yesterday you may have seen it elsewhere: Gawker, Time and the original source, The Citizen.

This video has had close to 1.5 million views since it was uploaded on Monday. That be a lot of views.

With the help of the GoPro, police managed to arrest two suspects on Sunday, a day after the incident occurred, with the third being arrested on Monday.

This guy must be seriously chuffed. Think of all the cash he’s making from YouTube!

Except that he’s not. It seems like he didn’t monetize his video.

How do you monetize a YouTube video? By checking a setting in the video upload menu that permits YouTube to serve pre-roll advertisments in front of your video.

On average, you could be paid between $2.5 and $5 per thousand views according to our sources, which is between R27 and R53 at the current exchange rate. This means that this guy could have made as much as R74 000 already.

Should Malcom Fox have monetized this video? Let us know your thoughts.

Such a shame!

Let this be a lesson to you all: Next time you record yourself being robbed with your GoPro, let the ads stay on when you post it to YouTube.
