Like clockwork, Apple has dropped some details on its new iOS8 update, which will include a host of brand-spanking new features; but what are they?
Notifications Centre: Firstly, the notifications system has been overhauled and enhanced, adding new gestures, such as letting the user swipe down on a new notification in order to reply to the message immediately.
The mail system has also been given a bit of a touch-up, allowing users to multitask. You can simply swipe down to drop your in-progress email (saving it into a draft), do what you need to in your mail, and swipe up again to pull your email back up to continue typing.
Health is Apple’s attempt to care about your well-being – cute, man. Health is a centralised place where many health apps can plug in on the back end so that users can have a single hub for all their health data and services.
QuickType is the new snazzy keyboard option in iOS 8 – giving you keyword auto-suggestions when typing; and get this: it’s tailored to who you’re talking to according to what subjects you talk about. Creepy, but awesome.
Apple’s goal to have multi-device continuity is being achieved with a new feature that allows you to switch between your iDevices, letting you continue what you were working with on your iPad, onto your iPhone, for example.
iMessage has also received a nice polish – letting you add group chats, preference settings, send audio notes with a simple swipe to activate, and even respond to them by simply holding it up to your phone.
There’s a few extra new features that will appeal to those die-hard iOS veterans.
iOS 8 will be available “this fall” (between September and November 2014) as a free software update for iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPod touch 5th generation, iPad 2, iPad with Retina display, iPad Air, iPad mini and iPad mini with Retina display.
OS X developers are able to access the developer preview immediately, while Mac users will get a free update to Yosemite “this fall” (between September and November)
