In some depressing news, South Africa is right at the top of the list in terms of the worst maths and science education in the world.
According to a World Economic Forum report, we “beat” Haiti, Lesotho, Chad, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and Kenya, to take the crown of worst of 148 countries; and no, besides the shame, there’s no prize.
Democratic Alliance education spokesperson Annette Lovemore want to have Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga brought before Parliament for the case to investigated further.
“[The ministerial report] exposed gaping holes at every level of our education system,” said Lovemore.
Gaping holes is an understatement. We aren’t even scraping the bottom of the barrel at this point – we are the bottom.
It’s a rather sad state of affairs, and hopefully the bottom and top tiers of the education system can be addressed so that steps to improvement can be taken soon.
