George Howard, former goalkeeper of English Football club, Charlton Athletic, was recently in a car accident in South Africa, while on holiday in Cape Town with two other members of Charlton.
It is understood Mr Pigott was behind the wheel when the accident happened, but only Mr Howard was seriously injured while the others escaped with a few scratches.
Mr Howard’s family friend Aaron Burrett, 29, told the Standard: “During the crash he fell on his head and cracked his skull. He has had 20 stitches in his head.
Howard is currently in an induced coma, breathing through machines.
Friends are raising funds to pay his medical bills, through an online fundraising page. The results so far have been heartwarming.
Obviously [his parents] don’t know how long he will be in this coma, it could be months. He is their only child. They are trying to hold up. There’s nothing more they can do. We want to raise as much money as we can. His dad is a taxi driver and is self-employed and there is the mortgage and bills to pay. It’s going to be difficult.”
