If you were wondering whether the government’s “modest” R100 million spending on luxury cars was necessary – it definitely wasn’t.
The government’s knack for splashing out on Mercedes-Benzes and BMWs with the tax-payers hard-earned moola is about as pointless as a soccer ball, and there’s a much smarter (and more humble way) they could have gotten from A to B.
If they used online car deals service 7 Days, the government could’ve saved A LOT of money. How much exactly though?
According to the latest ministerial handbook, members at national level may be provided with one vehicle for use in Cape Town and one vehicle for use in Pretoria.
So, there are 35 ministers and 37 deputy ministers, who all need two cars (apparently). AND, the ANC argues that they require cars with good safety. Well, the 2014 Toyota Avanza has a great safety rating across the board, and is one of the featured 7 Days deals at R171,750. So, according to my abacus, if every minister (72) got TWO of these bad boys, it would cost R24,732,000. Hmm… that’s a saving of R75,268,000.
That’s R75 million that can go to education development.
And who ever said government budgeting was hard?
Check out 7 Days.
