Continuing the fashion of miraculously finding lost works long after the creators have kicked the bucket, a man has emerged with an audio recording of Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien’s speech from a Hobbit Dinner in Rotterdam, 1958.
It’s the new preeeecious….
Tolkien spoke to a packed hall of 200 Middle-earth fanatics, discussing how writing the famed books have changed his life, as well as breaking into the odd Hobbit song and dance, and reciting an Elvish poem.
So why has this rare audio not turned up sooner? Well, it was being horded by a man named René van Rossenberg, a Tolkien expert who owned a fan shop dedicated to all things Lord of the Rings, and he was basically being extremely selfish, hiding it away from the world and clinging to it like a madman. Now doesn’t that sound familiar…
