This is bad.
Most of us are aware of the terrible environment of most public South African hospitals. In many cases, patients get turned AWAY from hospitals because of staff shortages. The result? Dead babies and children. Not good.
Remember the story of little Unabantu? That did NOT end well.
Oh, and he was turned away from a private hospital. So, yeah……….
But get this, right – Mouldmed is an agency who PLACES doctors and nursing staff at various private hospitals. However, the people working at Mouldmed as well as the staff who are being ‘placed’ at these private medical institutions are not always qualified for the job.
Terrifying – and true.
In fact, the dude that is topmost responsible for calling doctors who work for the Department Of Health when private hospitals call in to Mouldmed looking for last-minute staff, is a guy that goes by the name of Joseph Maarman.
Here’s the shocker: he only has a Grade 12, and NO medical background whatsoever.
He uses a list that was issued to him which includes the names and details of a wide array of medical staff.
While we’re at it, here’s some info about Maarman’s list that will frighten you even more:
The ‘LIST’ is dangerously flawed. It contains indiscriminate and personal details of everyone who has ever attended a medical school – from student doctors and those with foreign qualifications (people falling into both these categories are regarded as interns and are legally required to work only under supervision at public facilities) to academics with other medical qualifications such as microbiology.
But that’s not all. Going through the list, which is arranged alphabetically, this journalist identified several individuals who have been previously suspended or deregistered by the HPCSA, as well as practicing general physicians (GPs) who don’t hold the Trauma Certificates, which are a mandatory requirement for ER doctors. This is a mess.
And this is happening in our country’s hospitals EVERYDAY. The results are devastating.
