Ever been tempted to have that left over sip of wine from last night’s party because you cant stand to see the precious juice go down the drain?
Please don’t… but also don’t chuck away your left overs either: they can be pretty handy.
Our favourite beverages aren’t just good for keeping us sane, they have some pretty fantastic alternative uses as well!
Wine is a natural favourite for many Cape Tonians and inevitably there’s always some noob who opens a new bottle of your favourite blend, when everyone is already half passed out, for you to discover, half full and sad-looking, in the morning. With Winter drawing in and the rainy season upon us, spiced wine is a great warming cocktail for a cosy evening on the couch, with a big fat bowl of stew and roasties not to mention a fantastic way of turning the weekend’s wine into a weekday treat.
Beer is another tasty treat we South Africans tend to enjoy after a long day at work. This pre-dinner thirst quencher or pre-party quickie often gets set aside once it loses that crisp just-opened freshness. You may find yourself stuck with several almost-empty bottles. Don’t discard this handy pot scourer, use it to remove rust and restore pots and pans to their glowing, better-than-new state.
Finally, before you throw out that extra half a cup of coffee you made by accident, think of your poor little outdoor plants, shivering in the chilly winter mornings. Acid-loving plants love a little coffee instead of water to keep them warm and the acidity in the soil is perfect for healthy thriving growth in spite of the onslaught of cold fronts.
