Oh wow, now this is awkward. You know those times when you say something mean about someone you know, and then turn around only to see that person standing right behind you? Well, multiply the intensity of that situation by a thousand and you still don’t have a vague conception as to how uncomfortable the following scenario must have been.

Ray Cote, a New York School Board President made a pretty awful remark about a parent at a public meeting last month. He had no idea that his mic was still on and went on to announce to the entire audience, “This one here, chubby wubby, she gets fatter and fatter at every meeting. She really does,”.

Jees, he must be hating himself now.

Deena Bell, one of the town residents, heard the comment, recorded it and posted the video clip of Cote uttering the now regretted words to Youtube.

But here is the most ironic part of this entire fiasco: Cote is part of a diversity and sensitivity team that was formed after students posted racial comments on Twitter in March after a basketball game. We don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

Cote has subsequently resigned from his career in education.

Hopefully this story inspires us to all think – hard – before we speak.
