No topic gets more heated than political affiliation particularly in our beloved SA when race colours everything. A little bashing of political parties is to be expected post-election but this is a total annihilation of any legitimacy for Agang SA.
From its insecure inception Agang SA was destined to become more an excuse than a “platform” — to not vote for the Democratic Alliance (DA) — a movement whose only substance existed in Mamphela Ramphele’s experience, delighting white liberals — wealthy central bankers or actors or former UCT students still sneering at the romance of faux-activism during the 80s.[…] Once again Agang SA revealed its failure to understand that the central foundation of opposition politics lies in strength. Amendments to opposition policies or perception — for if that is indeed what one seeks — are best shaped surely inside its existing structure, not outside. If ego destroys this prospect (which is now a reasonable explanation as to the disappointment of the DA-Agang SA one night stand), then the only alternative is to lie — to try and convince the electorate that North Korea is a functioning democracy or that escaping poverty can be achieved by purchasing luxury brands. And if neither are appealing, then one is doomed to ineffective political mediocrity — the premises of the contemporary white liberal.
So, just to be clear Simon, you didn’t vote for Agang? Just one thing, if everyone only ever works “inside existing structures” how do we effect meaningful change when the existing structures are clearly broken and the sticky tape and glue have long since been insufficient to hold them together? Read the full slating here and tell us if you agree.
