Fair Cape Dairies, the dairy farm that is home to over 3,500 happy cows is situated along the beautiful and picturesque Durbanville Wine Route.
Fair Cape cares about three things
1. Animal Welfare
2. Environmental Welfare
3. Social Welfare
Check out point number one on that list. Did you know that Fair Cape Dairies is the first dairy in South Africa that launched the Cow Comfort Index?
Here’s some more info, from the cow’s mouth:
The Animal Welfare pillar focuses on the wellbeing of our cows and takes into account the following actions:
- Our cows are housed in spacious and comfortable housing with access to both under-roof and outdoor sections
- Our cows are each individually monitored three times daily for any illness or discomfort
- A vet is in daily attendance to attend to any sick cows
- No shouting, clapping, hitting or any other actions which may scare the cows are permitted on this farm
- Cows are fed an individualized diet created specifically for each cow
- Machines are checked daily to ensure that they work well for the comfort of the cows
- Our cows are scored monthly according to a cow comfort index with nine different metrics
All of the abovementioned points form part of the Cow comfort index. Each month, the cows are scored on the nine different criteria and given an overall score – these scores are uploaded onto our social media platforms.
On Friday 2 May, we’ll be uploading the cow comfort scores onto our Facebook page.
