Hours after Boston commemorated the one-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing, a bomb scare occurred at the marathon’s finish line, when a man wearing a black veil walked barefoot through the street, shouting “Boston Strong!”

Two unattended backpacks were detonated by the bomb squad, one belonging to the veiled man, Kevin Edson. Edson’s bag contained a rice cooker filled with confetti. Edson was arrested and charged with disturbing the peace, disorderly conduct, disturbing a public assembly, possession of a hoax device and making a false bomb threat.

During his arraignment, it was revealed Edson suffers from multiple mental health issues, including bipolar disorder, and he has been off his meds for a couple months. Edson claims that his “performance” got the best of him.

If this was a performance, it was the most irresponsible, senseless, and selfish performance I can imagine. It was akin to shouting ‘fire’ in a theater. People were put in fear, public transportation was disrupted, and a day of somber remembrance and reflection was marred by this defendant’s choices,” said the judge at the arraignment.
