In the market for an island? If you don’t mind ghosts, the occasional possession, a morbid back story and loads of corpses, this island just off of Venice, Italy, could be just the fixer-upper you’ve been looking for.
Described as Hell, the island of madness is considered to be the most haunted place on earth. And the deserted island of Poveglia has just come on the market. Located on the Venetian lagoon, Poveglia’s sordid past started back in the 19th century, when it was used as a checkpoint for ships heading to Venice. When a ship carrying plague victims arrived at the island in 1793, it was sealed off and used as a quarantine zone. It served as a place where anyone with a infectious disease was exiled to (and eventually die) for more than a century after that.
In 1922 it got converted into a hospital for the mentally ill, where a mad doctor did lobotomies on the regular. He later jumped off the bell tower. Numerous ghost stories and tales of possessions have since besmirched Poveglia’s reputation.
