Have You Seen What They’re Doing With The Grain Silos At The V&A Waterfront?

For a long time the grain silos at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town have been standing abandoned, home only to rats, pigeons and seagulls. But no longer. A R500 million redevelopment project will transform the disheveled building into a modern art museum.

For a long time the grain silos at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town have been standing abandoned, home only to rats, pigeons and seagulls. But no longer. A R500 million redevelopment project will transform the disheveled building into a modern art museum.

British designer, Thomas Heatherwick plans to convert the abandoned grain silo complex in conjunction with the V&A Waterfront and local firms Van Der Merwe Miszewski, Rick Brown Associates and Jacobs Parker. The silos will be transformed into the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA). The art collection of entrepreneur Jochen Zeitz will constitute the museum’s permanent exhibition.

The design of the MOCAA takes into consideration the heritage of the building. The silos will still form part of the buildings architecture, with some of tubes used as elevators, and others hollowed out and preserved as facade.
