Maybe you don’t remember or know of the infamous Heaven’s Gate cult. As cults go, it ended in a mass exit (suicide) of 39 members in 1997. A recent article about them, not only divulges about their affinity for technology but how they funded themselves through web design.
Most internet sites from the 1990s look ridiculous and tacky by present day standards, but these guys weren’t the best web designers even in their day. Somehow the web development company they ran, Higher Source gave them enough of an income to rent a mansion, wear matching sneakers, sweatsuits and cloaks, and enjoy castration procedures in Mexico – you know… The cult dream.
