The image of a low flying aircraft over a stadium is ingrained in the memories of all South Africans thanks to the 1995 Rugby World Cup final. If this would happen during the Brazil Soccer World Cup, the audience would have the privilege of witnessing a spectacular explosion.
At the moment it is illegal to shoot down an unresponsive plane over populated areas in Brazil, but the Brazilian Air Force wants to change that. Their air force wants permission to do what has to be done to defend the airspace surrounding the stadiums. There is already a four nautical mile no-fly zone in place around the 12 cup stadiums, and just for good measure, anti-aircraft guns will also be deployed. All they need now is permission to gun any plane down.
Enjoy the games, guys!
