Probably the best argument for smiling back at someone is that you don’t know if you will end up as material for a comedian. Comedian Pete Holmes’s neighbour didn’t return his smile, she is now the butt of his jokes.
Pete Holmes’s dad has only three jokes, they’re pretty bad, but still he laughs at them. Why? “Laugh – we all die someday,” says Holmes. When two strangers return a smile as they pass by on the street, all is right in the world Holmes argues. “Suddenly babies are high-fiving each other.”
So if you want high-fiving babies, smile back at people who smile at you.
