The object of the game is to link an actress or actor to Kevin Bacon in the fewest steps possible. The game, over the years, escalated into a global phenomenon. These days, there are websites dedicated to determining an actor’s Bacon Number. During an interview, Bacon Number 0 admitted he was not amused by the game at first.
The parlor game is almost 20 years old. It mimics the ‘six degrees of separation’ theory, that states anybody is no less than six relationships away from any other person in the world. Even Google has a built-in search function for an actor’s Bacon Number.
In honour of the game turning 20, SXSW had a sit down with Kevin Bacon and one of the game’s creators, Brian Turtle. “I was horrified by it. I thought it was a giant joke at my expense,” said Bacon during the interview. “I appreciate it now. But I was very resistant to it,” he continued.
Having starred in more than 65 movies, Bacon admitted he now makes use of Bacon Numbers when he is given the call sheet for a project.
… sometimes I forget whether I’ve worked with somebody or not. I’ll look at the call sheet, check the name, and then I’ll check their Bacon number. That way I can go on the set and say, ‘Good to see you,’ or ‘Good to see you again.'”
