New York’s bicycle couriers are well-known around the world. These madmen on the two-wheels risk their bodies, dodging between cars in the city’s bustling traffic. The underground weed market in NY also makes use of this type of delivery. Journalist Hunter Stuart spent a day delivering weed alongside one of New York’s bicycle weed couriers. Here’s his story.
Stuart met up with the owners of one of these couriers companies, Secret Fleet. They claim to sell about 1.4 kg of cannabis a week on average, using their fleet of cyclists. They allowed Stuart to accompany one of their delivery guys for a day, in efforts to remove the negative stigma that surrounds marijuana.
Stuart and his mentor completed 11 stops during the day, having only friendly encounters, ranging from medical cannabis users to young engineering students. Secret Fleet says they screen their customers and employees thoroughly, and only accept new clients from friend referrals.
We want our company to represent a certain lifestyle. That you can be a successful, active, social person, that you can affect people positively and that you can still smoke weed,” said one of the owners of Secret Fleet.
When asked whether legalization of cannabis will put them out of business, the owners told Stuart, that they don’t care so long as it means overcoming the negative stigma associated with marijuana. And it will make their mothers happy.
