Poaching is a horrible reality threatening South Africa’s endangered species. Sometimes we are desensitized to the plight of the animals being killed in our national parks. Hopefully this heart wrenching video of an injured rhino will invoke more people into combating poaching.
Seen stumbling across a road in the Kruger National Park, the dehorned rhino was caught on video this February. The rhino was found alive by rangers on 4 March, but had to be put down due to a bullet lodged in its brain.
More than a 1,000 rhinos were slaughtered for their horns last year in South Africa. Rhino horn is currently worth more than twice its weight in gold, due to a surge in demand from Asian markets. False claims of the horn’s medical capabilities and its use as a party drug by the rich, may lead to the species extinction within the next decade.
