Susie Wolff will drive in two practice sessions for Williams this year. She will be the first woman in more than 20 years to take part in a Formula One event. She will drive in the practice sessions before the British and German Grands Prix.
Since the last female driver, Italian Giovanna Amati failed to qualify for the Brazilian Grand Prix in 1992, the F1 only had betesticled participants. Susie Wolff’s involvement in the practice session puts her in line behind Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas (the main drivers) for Williams and Felipe Nasr (the official test and reserve driver). Thus Wolff is most likely not going to compete in this year’s Grand Prix season.
Wolff is an accomplished driver, having competed in the German Touring Car championship for seven years. She was also a distinguished go-karter in her youth, ranked 15th in the world at the age of 18.
Time will only tell if she gets a chance to drive for Williams at a later stage.
