Leave it to the tax man to get the job done. An investigation by the SARS elite Tax and Customs Enforcement Investigations (TCEI) unit has linked members of the Zuma family to organised crime. Two of the companies under investigation had employed Zuma’s son, Edward, and his nephew, Khulubuse. They are thought to have been employed as “political insurance.”
Although the pair are thought not have known about the alleged tax evasion and possible fraud and money laundering that was committed, they were appointed to senior positions during the time of alleged wrongdoing.
The TCEI and the Hawks are investigating Aurora Empowerment Systems for allegations of tax evasion and money laundering. Khulubuse Zuma was a director of the mining company that was accused of stripping the mine and destroying 5,300 jobs in the process. Edward Zuma is linked in the TCEI’s investigations of Amalgamated Tobacco Manufacturing’s CEO, Yusuf Kajee. The tobacco company is under investigations for tax evasion, fraud and smuggling.
