‘Don’t feed the trolls’ has become a valuable lesson for anyone who has frequented an online comment section. Be it online gaming or social media, trolls plague the internet denizens on every front. But there is some comfort to be found in a recent study done by the University of Manitoba titled ‘Trolls just want to have fun.’
The study done showed that online trolls had personality traits that fall in the so-called ‘Dark Tetrad’ category. They were found to exhibit signs of Machiavellianism, psychopathy and sadism. The study found the strongest correlation between trolling and sadism, which doesn’t bode well for curbing trolls by using moderators and replying to their comments, as it elicits pleasure for the trolls.
