I recently installed a greenhouse from Urban Freedom and I think I spent a total of 10 hours inside it this weekend. I might not do anything else ever again and I cannot stress to you how urgently you need to get one of these affordable, compact greenhouses.
I’ll get straight to it and tell you that they start at around R6,500 for a 2m X 2m greenhouse (R6,899 for 2m X 4m) and it takes about an hour to install. Do you know how affordable that is? When I first saw them I was expecting the usual greenhouse prices of R20k+. That’s why I didn’t think twice to get one.
We already had a veggie patch at The Residence, so were aware of how much fun it is to grow your own food. That, and the fact that you’re saving so much money not buying salad and veggies at the shops anymore! But to have a greenhouse just makes it all the more fun and efficient. Especially when it comes to the wind in Cape town, which can destroy smaller plants in one evening. Click here for the Top 10 reasons you should be getting a greenhouse.

Before you ask, yes, I did have Italian opera blaring in the background. It felt like a scene out of the Godfather.
We’ve got a long way to go before we start publishing greenhouse porn photos, but we’re getting there. The lettuce, tomatoes, rocket, celery, chives and chilli are going nicely and we’re germinating some green peppers and peas. Think about all those ingredients and think about how much you spend on them a year. You’ll pay for the greenhouse in no time, just on what you save not going to the shops!
This is what they have to say about it:
A greenhouse from Urban Freedom is a new force in affordable sustainability. Our robust greenhouses provide warmth, shelter and protection for whatever you decide to grow. Many of us want to know that what we are eating is organic, GMO and pesticide free and there is no better way to do this than to grow it ourselves.
We believe that growing your own vegetables is not just a basic human right and a privilege, but a way to live in harmony with nature. Knowing that the food you prepare is fresh, tasty, organic and pesticide free adds satisfaction and value to your family meals. If you have children the greenhouse is a great way to allow them to experience and learn the pleasure of growing things. Feeding your family truly organic produce will not only alleviate your grocery bill but ensures the quality of the food you consume.
