A few days ago the world was deprived of its access to what had become the crack-heroin of phone apps, Flappy Bird. The game’s creator Dong Nguyen stunned the world when he removed the highly lucrative game from the app store. Nguyen sat down for his first interview with Forbes after killing Flappy Bird. Here’s what the bird killer had to say.
The interview with Forbes took place under the condition his face not be revealed. The interview itself was delayed as Nyugen’s earlier surprise meeting with Vietnam’s deputy prime minister ran him off schedule. The 29-year-old Dong appeared stressed and smoked several cigarettes over the course of the 45 min interview.
Flappy Bird was designed to play in a few minutes when you are relaxed. But it happened to become an addictive product. I think it has become a problem. To solve that problem, it’s best to take down Flappy Bird. It’s gone forever,” said Nguyen during the interview.
Nguyen says that guilt and his life not being as comfortable as it was before the game went viral were the motivations behind pulling the game. He struggled to sleep with the game weighing on his conscience. “After the success of Flappy Bird, I feel more confident, and I have freedom to do what I want to do,” he says.
