Having £1 million in the bank may be a dream for most, but when you’re the Queen of England that means you’re scraping the bottom of the barrel and eating moldy biscuits. But help is on the way, from the most unlikely of places. Can taking advice from Downton Abbey solve One’s dreary financial state?
The aristocrats from the popular show Downton Abbey always have a way of getting out of a tight pinch when it gets to their finances. Marriage to a rich American or a deus ex machina letter makes it all well and dandy for another season. The Queen might be hoping for such a letter with her bank account running low.
The Royal Household for 2012-2013 had a budget of $51.38 million, which covers maintenance on the royal buildings, travel expenses and staff wages. That budget was exceeded by close to $4 million, which meant the royals had to pay out of their reserve fund; currently sitting at close to$1 million.
The repair builds on the royal buildings are mounting. They’re sitting with 60-year-old boilers, and in some places asbestos in the walls and lead rooftops have to be removed. So how can the Queen get back in the black? Well she might try find an American hedge-fund heiress to marry one of her family members. Or sit and wait for that miraculous letter in the mail. Or, she might modernise her estates, invite small industries to flourish in the protectionist micro-economy of her grounds, and syphon commission off of their market takings. You know, like the Crawleys did.
