Chess pieces are on the move on the political front as it was announced on Tuesday that Agang leader Mamphela Ramphele will be joining forces with the DA. The Daily Maverick gets into the finer details of this political play before the forthcoming general elections.
Some may see it as the no-hope party of Agang saving face before its eventual end, due to rising concerns about its economic stability. “But that’s largely irrelevant, because the prize for the DA was always Ramphele herself: a woman with impeccable Struggle credentials and that all-important intimate connection to Black Consciousness hero Steve Biko,” says Rebecca Davis from the Daily Maverick.
This is a straight move to improve the DA’s public image among black voters with them putting Ramphele forward as the party’s presidential candidate. Still, it has to be mentioned that some of the grass roots Agang supporters, were left with a bad taste in their mouth about the possible merger, going by their Facebook comments.
