The mayor of the host city of the 2014 Winter Olympics has claimed the whole city is straight during an interview with the BBC. The same reporter had drinks at a Sochi gay bar the previous night. Go figure.
When further pressed about the issue, Mayor Anatoly Pakhomov backtracked by saying that if there were homosexuals, he “didn’t bloody know” them.
Pakhomov’s comments come in the wake of large gay right protests in Russia due to a law passed in June 2013 banning all promotion of “non-traditional” sexualities to under-18s.
The interview, conducted by BBC reporter John Sweeney, also has a segment where opposition leader Boris Nemtsov starts laughing at the Sochi Mayor’s ignorance; and expressed bafflement at how gay clubs in Sochi haven’t gone bankrupt yet given the apparent dearth of homosexuals in the area. We don’t know either.
