ANC branches in Gauteng have included former president Thabo Mbeki in a list of individuals they would like to see in Parliament.
Mbeki was placed in amongst 200 other candidates for the national assembly, in a list that was jam-packed with President Jacob Zuma’s critics and rivals.
Mbeki’s placement on the list comes just a few months after Gauteng ANC secretary David Makhura noted that the party needed him to help woo middle-class voters to the ruling party – partially due to Zuma’s complete lack of effectiveness in that regard.
ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe has since dismissed the plan.
The province also nominated Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe to be an MP – only a year after their failed attempt to have him replace Zuma as ANC president at the Mangaung conference.
Also nominated by the province are former ANC national executive committee (NEC) members Tokyo Sexwale and Mathews Phosa, both of whom opposed Zuma at Mangaung.
