That’s right! We have a new world leader in the dumbest-ever-password category. And it’s… Well, its pretty daft.
SplashData, the company that compiled the statistics to determine the world’s worst password, checks to see how many times a given password has been hacked online. The more it’s been hacked, the worse it is.
Last year’s winner, “password” boggled the mind with it’s careful combination of idiocy and simplicity. This year’s winner, however, takes things a little further.
Seeking to make the lives of hackers more difficult, millions of people changed their password to ‘123456’ – and were rewarded by being hacked. Over, and over, and over again – making ‘123456’ the worlds dumbest password.
Other common passwords were “abc123”, “admin”, “iloveyou”, “1111111” and “photoshop”.
Morgan Slain, CEO of SplashData said:
Seeing passwords like ‘adobe123’ and ‘photoshop’ on this list offers a good reminder not to base your password on the name of the website or application you are accessing.
Another interesting aspect of this year’s list is that more short numerical passwords showed up even though websites are starting to enforce stronger password policies.
Know this: there are idiots out there. Millions of them.
