The rector of the University of the Free State, Jonathan Jansen, has made a complaint to the South African Human Rights Commission after a bizarre advert for student accommodation appeared in the local papers.
The advert seems to address “non-affirmative action” female students as their main target.
An investigation conducted by students following a tweet addressed to Jansen on Saturday will accompany the advertisement in the complaint letter to the SAHRC.
Which translates to: “Safe student accommodation for non-affirmative action female Kovsie students in secure student houses. Walking distance from UFS campus.”
Jansen explains the nature of the case:
Predictably, the black students were told they were full with a long waiting list, and the white students were told that of course there is accommodation available. We have records of those interactions and will be reporting this private residence to the appropriate authorities.
The Times attempted to call the number given at the bottom of the ad, but there was no answer.
