Here are The Daily Beast’s 13 Oscar Nomination Shockers:

1) Nothing for Oprah:

Though she may have put on a stellar performance as the alcoholic, unfaithful wife of longtime White House butler Cecil Gaines in ‘The Butler’ – but no cigar.

2) Tom Hanks left empty handed:

This is sad for Hanks, particularly considering that critics tipped him off for not one, but two Oscars. But his roles as the real-life seaman in ‘Captain Phillips’, as well as Walt Disney in ‘Saving Mr. Banks’ just didn’t do enough to earn him a nomination.

3) TWO for Jonah Hill?!

He recieved his last nomination for ‘Moneyball’, but no one really expected him to snatch another nomination this year. He has been recognised by the academy for his portrayal of Leonardo DiCaprio’s degenerate lude-popping, cocaine-snorting, hooker-banging stockbroker boy Friday in ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’.

By the way, because Jonah has now had two Oscar nominations – he leapfrogs others actors like Robert Redford, Gary Oldman, Ryan Gosling, Alan Rickman and Mia Farrow, who only have one each.

4) Emma Thompson snubbed for Streep

Despite her fantastic portrayal of  Mary Poppins’ scribe in ‘Saving Mr. Banks’, Streep was preferred for her role in ‘August: Osage County’. Thompson’s film also made $60 million more than Streeps’ – but the academy were having none of it.
