US publication TMZ has uncovered a gallery of photographs taken in 2004 during the thick of the conflict in Fallujah in Iraq. The images depict US marines burning and posing with the bodies of what are alleged to be deceased Iraqi combatants.
The Pentagon launched an investigation following the publishing of the photographs. US rules of engagement prohibit the post-mortem destruction of enemy bodies, and could land the soldiers in jail if they are found guilty of such a charge.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the marines may have been burning old, unclaimed corpses, and not the bodies of recently killed combatants.
The investigation is ongoing.
