Over the past week, a few very frenzied e-toll users have been complaining about SANRAL sending them SMSs which claim that they owe them money.
One user claimed that SANRAL sent him an SMS via a number that only Standard Bank had access to. He wrote:
About this issue that Sanral is SMS-ing everyone with bills: My wife received an SMS on an old number, which her mother now has, for the car that is registered in her name, but that I am using.
The only institution that still uses this number, even though we tried to change it many times, is Standard Bank. I feel that the banks might be giving our details to Sanral.
We have still not received any invoices from Sanral. We have now only received this SMS to a number they should not have.
Standard bank was also approached regarding the breach, a spokesperson for the bank said:
We will be conducting a thorough investigation of the alleged breach of telephone details, but wish to reassure all our customers that, in line with various legislation around customer confidentiality, Standard Bank does not share customer information with third parties.
Standard Bank subscribes to the highest international standards and employs the best technology and systems to safeguard customer information.
