Speaking at the ANC’s 102nd birthday celebrations at KaNyamazane near Nelspruit, Jacob urged the crowed to vote for the ANC, in order to allow the party to change unspecified aspects of the country’s constitution.

We want a huge majority this time because we want to change certain things that couldn’t be changed with a small majority so that we move forward because there are certain hurdles. People talk about a constitution they have never seen. We saw that constitution,

Asked to comment on the remarks, presidential spokesperson, Mac Maharaj refrred journalists to the ANC. ANC spokesperson, Jackson Mthembu said:

I’m not the one who was making the speech. Ask him. It is unfair to us for you to ask us to decode someone else’s speech.

So that clears that up, then.

Political analyst and relative of musical comedians, Steven Friedman said:

The president knows the ANC won’t get a two-thirds majority. It is simply a way of saying to the party’s constituency: ‘Look, we tried to change things but we couldn’t because you didn’t give us a two-thirds majority’.

But you can all chill the heck out. The current political climate suggests that the ANC won’t get a two thirds majority – in fact, they’ll be very lucky to get over 60% of the vote.
