The frigid conditions in the US are no longer a laughing matter, as cold air that was trapped in the Canadian arctic continues to spread across America, freezing whole cities in its wake.

There was some respite for Chicago though, whose temperature rose above zero degrees Fahrenheit (-18 Celsius) for the first time since Sunday, which allowed photographers to go out and snap these amazing images.
