A sailor aboard a yacht competing in the 2014 Cape 2 Rio race has died from injuries sustained during a storm, 16 hours after the race commenced on calm waters from Table Bay on the weekend.
The yacht, named Bill de-mastered during a storm, killing one crew member and injuring several others.
A number of other vessels were damaged in the same storm, and have turned back to Saldanha Bay and Cape Town to make repairs.
The NSRI is assisting damaged vessels.
