2013 will be remembered for many reasons. It was the year of the Reeva Steenkamp shooting, Mandela’s passing, and Miley Cyrus’ twerking. All-in-all, it was a year with moments that left us shocked, bewildered, amazed, and heart-broken. In honour of this crazy year, TIME has put together a collection of the ‘Most Surprising’ images of 2013.

24 January, 2013. Authorities carry out the court-ordered amputation of the fingers of a convicted thief in a public square in the southern Iranian city of Shiraz, Iran. The 29-year-old man was convicted for being part of a 10-member gang that carried out burglaries in the city. He was sentenced to the amputation of three fingers, the confiscation of his property and three years in prison.
