The Tragic Internet: 20-Year-Old Kid Live-Streams Suicide

The internet is a place where lots of dark things happen. Bitcoins can be used to kill politicians and buy drugs, social media is used to post rape videos, and don't even try to start a debate on Twitter. But a new low was reached when a 20-year-old live streamed his suicide attempt.

The internet is a place where lots of dark things happen. Bitcoins can be used to kill politicians and buy drugs, social media is used to post rape videos, and don’t even try to start a debate on Twitter. But a new low was reached when a 20-year-old live streamed his suicide attempt.

Using the social media website 4chan, an unidentified male announced that he wanted to commit suicide. A helpful fellow 4chan user quickly set up an internet group chat video.

The young male wrote the reason for his suicide attempt:

As an oldfag who’s been on 4chan since 2004, I thought I would finally give back to the community. I am willing to an hero on cam for you all.

‘An hero’ is 4chan slang for committing suicide. 200 people, the biggest number of people allowed in a group video chat,  then proceeded to watch as the young man drank a bottle of pills and vodka. The camera continued to run until firefighters pulled him out of his bedroom.

The video can still be seen on some corners of the internet, and some people identified him as a student from the University of Guelph, Canada.

The student survived the incident.
