A metallic-red Mac Pro has just sold for almost ten million bucks in a recent auction, making it the most expensive computer ever sold.
Why the colour red? Product Red, otherwise known as (PRODUCT)RED, is brand that is licensed to partner with some of the worlds biggest companies. Started by Bono, the brand looks to engage the private sector for the purpose of raising awareness and funds to help eliminate HIV/AIDS in Africa.
The money earned from the sale of every Red product is given to The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
In addition to the Red Mac Pro created by Apple’s design team, the auction also sold a series of other items designed by Jony Ive and Marc Newson, including:
A pair of rose gold Apple Earpods that sold for R4.5 million, a 1966 bottle of Dom Pérignon housed in a red cooler auctioned for R930,000; a custom designed Leica Digital Rangefinder Camera that fetched R18 million and “The (RED) Desk,” which was sold for R16 million.
The new Mac Pro is powered by an Intel Xeon E5 CPU with up to 12 cores, and standard dual AMD FirePro GPUs, packed in cylinder with a 6.6 inch diameter and cooled by an innovative, central thermal core designed to wick heat away from the primary processing chips for evacuation out the top.
Neither the basic Mac Pro, nor the red edition are available to the public quite yet.
