A 20-year-old interview with Kurt Cobain has been unearthed, in which he opens up about his school years, his feelings of alienation and his sexual confusion.
In July of 1993, Cobain sat down with music journalist Jon Savage in New York, and discussed the topic of identity. Some audio from the interview has been used to create this short animated video. In it, Cobain can be heard lamenting how “different” and “alienated” he felt in school – leading Savage to ask Cobain if he ever thought he was gay.
Yeah. Yeah. I thought that might be the solution to my problem. Although I never experimented with it, I had a gay friend, and then my mother wouldn’t allow me to be friends with him anymore because… well, she’s homophobic. It was real devastating because finally I found a male friend who I actually hugged and was affectionate too, and we talked about a lot of things… I couldn’t hang out with him anymore.
