Meet Thalente Biyela. His story reads like millions of others in our country: he grew up with an abusive stepfather, he sold drugs on the streets of Durban to survive, and has been homeless since his mother passed away at age 11.
But that all changed in 2006 when a skateboarding park opened in North Beach, Durban. It turns out, Thalente has epic skateboarding skills. He lived in the park and slept underneath rubbish bins, until the local community took him under their wing. Since then, he’s furthered his education and been invited to the US to explore his skateboarding talent.
I dare you to watch this video and not tear up.
