One day it’s just open sea – the next day there’s an island. Filmed just off the coast of Japan, an erupting volcano has just formed an entirely new island that is about 650 meters across.
The footage in this clip was captured by the Japanese coast guard when they were alerted to some “surtseyan activity” – an explosive interaction of sea-water and lava, generating violent jets of steam and ash.
