Condoms are killing the LA porn industry.
In January this year, a condom law that made it mandatory for condoms to be used on all adult film sets went into effect in Los Angeles County.
The law was welcomed with open, um, arms.
We’re lying – of course it wasn’t. The law caused the number of film permits issued to porn producers in LA County to drop by an extreme 95%. Only 24 permits have been issued so far in 2013, compared to 480 filed in the same time period last year.
Why did this happen? The AIDS Healthcare Association authorised the law, insisting it’s the only way to ensure workplace safety and protect adult actors from STDs.
The Free Speech Coalition and film producers oppose the law, saying viewers do not want to see condoms in porn and that currently safety measures adequately protect actors. It’s gotten so bad that porn producers have either taken to the underground or are filming outside of LA.
