Two-time Academy Award winner Robert De Niro was given an Oscar for his role as Vito Corleone in ‘The Godfather Part II’. But, in a strange turn of events, it has been revealed that he also auditioned for the role of Santino “Sonny” Corleone in the first film – something that he was ultimately not as successful with.
The role of Sonny went to James Caan, but that didn’t prevent a spirited audition from a 30-year-old De Niro.
Now 70, De Niro can look back at a career full of glittering highlights, though this may not be one of them.
Director Francis Ford Coppola later commented about De Niro’s audition:
He was spectacular, but it was Sonny really like killer, nothing you could ever sell.
