It seems that every week there’s a new headline implicating social media in sex crimes. Remember the Steubenville rape case? This week 10 boys, all between the ages of 13 and 15, have been arrested in Montreal, Canada on the suspicion of producing and distributing child pornography on the social networking site, SnapChat.
Because SnapChat automatically deletes a photo a few seconds after it’s been viewed, seven girls had their picture taken or were tricked into having their picture taken, thinking it would be deleted immediately.
Snapchat is an extremely popular site and it’s estimated that over 20 million pictures are shared every day. Despite its inventors insisting that SnapChat offers “greater privacy” than other social networks, there have been various reports about hackings that allow users to save photos that should have been deleted.
The boys have been released and will return to court on 20 January.
