Florida seems a nice enough place to live. But there is always that niggling worry that there’s something wrong with Florida. Oh yes, that’s it – you’re permanently at risk of losing everything you own down a massive gaping hole in the earth.
Just this year there was a guy in Florida who was in his bed, only to to disappear forever when the earth opened up directly beneath his bedroom. Scary stuff.
But it seems one man and his bedroom were not enough for the subterranean sinkholes, as just yesterday they claimed a mans entire house, before chomping his boat, too. Residents in at least six surrounding homes in the area were evacuated as at least one other house was damaged by the still expanding hole.
Initial police reports said that the sinkhole formed around 6 a.m. and was about 4 metres wide, but Deputy Fire Chief Tripp Barrs claimed that it might well grow to nearly 24 metres wide and 12 metres deep.
Before the sinkhole took everything, the family inside first suspected a robbery, but father, Michael Dupre, knew better:
We thought someone had broken into the house. I knew there was something going on sinkhole-wise so I got the family out and called 911.
