There have been some really, really big art deals lately. Just this week, the worlds most expensive artwork was sold for R1,4 billion. And another billion-rand deal was finalised just yesterday. Dollar bills everywhere.
We’re used to seeing artists like Andy Warhol sell paintings for millions, but his personal record was broken yesterday when one of his paintings went for $105 million at a New York City Auction. It was a prized 1963 painting that captures the immediate aftermath of a violent car crash that was sold to yet another, anonymous bidder.
The picture is a 2,5X4 metre mammoth, titled “Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)”. It pictures a twisted body sprawled across a car’s mangled interior. The graphic work has only been seen once in public in the past 26 years.
Michael Frahm, a contemporary art adviser and partner at the London-based Frahm Ltd, said that this is only the beginning:
The demand for seminal works by historical important artists is truly unquestionable, and we will keep witnessing new records being broken. This is the ultimate trophy hunting.
