Curious about who’s coining it in Africa and why? Of course you are. Forbes just announced nine fresh faces that joined the esteemed list of Africa’s 50 Richest people of 2013.
It seems Tanzania’s doing pretty well with three newcomers on the list – the most out of any country.
The wealthiest newcomer, Issad Rebrab, debuts with an insane $3,2 billion. He’s the founder of Cevital, a company that produces sugar, vegetable oil and margarine. They also own steel manufacturing and distribution assets. Who knew some giving people some marg could make you so much money?
Vimal Shah from Kenya is next on the list with a mere $1,6 billion. A man of many talents, his company, Awka Group, is a conglomerate that dabbles in media, real estate developments, and owns the publicly traded Afriquia Gas and Maghreb Oxygene. He’s also the Morocco’s Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries. Obviously.
Rostam Aziz, the richest man in Tanzania, walks around with $1 billion. His key assets include a 35% stake in Vodacom Tanzania, and a stake in Caspian Mining. He also owns real estate in Dubai and Oman.
Reginald Mengi, also from Tanzania, is Africa’s richest media mogul, worth an estimated $550 million. He owns 11 newspapers, three television stations and ten radio stations. Well done sir.
Gus Attridge of South Africa (finally!) rocks up next on the list with $525 million thanks to his company, Aspen Pharmacare’s ballooning stock.
The last Tanzanian, Mohammed ‘Mo’ Dewji, is the young CEO of METL. METL is a conglomerate company with interests in distribution, textile, manufacturing, agriculture and real estate. He’s also a member of Tanzania’s parliament.
Femi Otedola is a Nigerian energy mogul and an insane 1100% increase in the share price of his petroleum distribution company, Forte Oil, over the past year has fueled his fortune to an estimated $410 million.
Tunde Folawiyo is the managing director of Yinka Folawiyo Group a conglomerate group that whose interests include shipping, banking, construction, agriculture, and energy trading. He’s worth a measly $200 million.
